Pilgrim’s Way- What “gift” do you recommend to people that you feel is a gift to the world?

Dave- The “Autobiography of a Yogi” by Parmahansa Yogananda. That pretty much sums it up for me. That book gave me the most joy because it opened up endless possibilities for me. I think it is the most powerful spiritual book I’ve found.

PW- What motivated you to become part of the staff at Pilgrim’s Way?

D- The Pilgrim’s Way is the spiritual heart of this peninsula and I want to be part of it.

PW- Where did you grow up?

D- Los Angeles.

PW- What did your mother and father do?

D- My Dad was a railroad man for the Santa Fe Railroad. My Mom was a house wife.

PW- What was your most memorable job?

D- That would be when I was the manager of the Big Sur Lodge General Store.

PW- What is your favorite book or author and why?

D- Aside from the Autobiography of a Yogi, it would definitely be The Film Encyclopedia by Ephrain Katz. It’s the bible for all films.

PW- What is you favorite word?

D- Hope.

PW- What is your least favorite word?

D- Does George W. Bush count as a single word? Well, ok; then gossip.

PW- What turns you on?

D- The future.

PW- What turns you off?

D- Negativity.

PW– What sound or noise do you love?

D- The sound of water moving like an ocean or stream.

PW– What sound or noise do you hate?

D- Elevator music.

PW– What profession, other than your own, would you like to attempt?

D- A Reference Librarian.

PW– What profession, other than your own, would you not like to attempt?

D- There’s so many,… I’d have to say door-to-door Sales.

PW– Finally, if heaven does exist, what would you like to hear God say when you enter the Pearly Gates?

D- Come on in!

When you shop at a mega-retailer chain store or an online retailer (yes, like Amazon), most of your dollars leave the local economy. You may save a little, but the loss to our hometowns result in local unemployment, higher taxes, and reduced services. By supporting locally-owned, independent businesses, communities keep their dollars working for them as they enrich the local economy, increase the diversity of available products, provide better service and improve the quality of life for all of us.

Trading independent retailers for big-box chains weakens the local economy. This is because local stores recycle a much larger share of their sales revenue back into the local economy, while chains siphon most of the dollars spent at their stores out of the community, funneling them back to corporate headquarters or to distant suppliers. The added economic benefit of local stores has been dubbed the “local premium”. Several studies have quantified it. From Andersonville IL, Austin TX, Boulder CO and San Francisco, economic impact studies show that locally owned stores generate greater benefits for the local economy than do national chains. The Andersonville Study, for instance, shows that for every $100 a consumer spends: Local businesses give back $68 to the local economy. Chain stores only give back $43.

The Local Premium impacts:

· Local payrolls, as locally owned businesses spend a larger share of their revenue on local labor because they carry out all management functions on-site, rather than at corporate headquarters.

· Procurement, as local retailers spend more than twice as much buying goods and services from other local businesses. They bank locally; hire local accountants, attorneys, designers, and other professionals; advertise in local media; and source inventory from local firms.

· Profits; because their owners live in the area, a larger portion of the local retailers’ profits stay within the local economy.

· Charitable giving, as local retailers donate more on average to local charities and community organizations than the chains do.

Adding dollars circulating in the local economy translates into a larger number and wider variety of available jobs. The implications of the local premium for how cities approach economic development are significant. Not only do big-box stores eliminate more retail jobs than they create, but they reduce local economic activity and job creation in other sectors. Conversely, expanding local businesses generates substantially greater economic benefits.

By supporting locally-owned, independent businesses, communities keep their dollars working for them as they enrich the local economy, increase the diversity of available products, provide better service and improve the quality of life for all of us. During this recession, now more than ever, if you understand this issue and care about your community you should PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR HOUSE IS!

The Pilgrim’s Way Community Bookstore & Secret Garden is pleased to offer a Benefit Program in recognition of your support of our local independence for 40 years! Our Benefit Program Membership options include valuable benefits tailored to your preferences. Pick up a Membership Application in the store or at www.PilgrimsWay.com on the About Us page in the drop down menu for a pdf download.

Something we don’t talk about much in the west, grief. Certainly not in public or with people you want to keep as friends! Maybe in therapy or at a funeral, right? Who wants to spend time grieving anyway?! People want to have fun. Go out to the movies or the club. Go shopping and do something. Yeah, me too. But there is “good grief” and more people are starting to pay attention.

Paul and I attended a grief ritual with Sonbonfu Some’ at the end of January. Neither one of us had before and we didn’t quite know what to expect.

Why did we? Well, contrary to the peaceful, serene space you find us in at the bookstore and garden, we work very hard to create that and continually fall short of our intentions. Let’s face it; disappointment, loss, struggle, these things happen in life – for all of us. We don’t have to live a particularly dangerous life style to experience loss. The problem is not so much the loss, it’s that we hang on to it, “stuff it” as they say and it builds up and gets heavier with time. To answer the question “Why did we?”, our load is pretty heavy right now. We thought it was a good idea to clean some out if we could. Besides the event was called “Dancing with Creativity and Grief”.

Sobonfu explains that creativity and grief are two sides of the same coin. When we flush out the grief that is present, the channel becomes clear for creativity to flow through us; as natural as the air we breath and just as abundant. What a concept. No need to distract, avoid, numb out – just let it move through.

I got to tell you – Wow! Words can’t fully express the value of my experience. What I can say is that I felt lighter, more peaceful and more compassionate as a result of my experience. The next day I had a spring in my step, I had more energy and was more productive than I can remember for some time now. Paul has had that really bad flu going around that keeps people coughing for up to three months and the next day it was gone!

Here is her web site & a YouTube video.

Lecture Description:

John has treated people and animals and he prides himself on his estimated success rate of 90% as well as the positive feedback from clients, with which he is often inundated. He works in the following ways:

Applying his hands: Usually John places his hands on the head of the patient. The placement of hands is not always to the area required, as John believes that the body can channel the healing to the required area. Some patients feel a variation in temperature during treatment, a tingling or vibrating sensation, although some may not feel anything apart from the light pressure of John’s hands.

Speaking to patients over the phone and in some cases even over the radio: When John gives treatment by phone, he recommends that during treatment the patient holds a tissue over the earpiece of the telephone and then places it over the area of the body where healing is required.

Counselling during treatment:
John feels that counselling and healing are intertwined due to the relaxed state the patient reaches during treatment, enabling them to respond to his healing voice. John offers counselling for any concerns, whether or not it’s related to an ailment in need of healing.
