Whale, Wait til you see this!

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

You may remember hearing about the beached whale a couple of weeks ago sighted north of Santa Cruz. I did, and I completely forgot until we happened to be up in that area and someone mentioned it. How could we not? How many people get a chance to see a whale, alive? Bella, my granddaughter and I made the trip. However, this sightseeing opportunity comes with a major “gross” factor. The first thing to hit the senses will be the olfactory; the smell. Within minutes, the visual is staggering. The sight at first seems unreal even scrambled; bizarre.

A local radio station had someone interviewing people on the beach. Bella was asked to comment since the Earth is really in the hands of those who are now children. The experience was riveting. Not like a Discovery channel episode with spectacular photos.  More like the kind of experience one is somehow at a loss for words to share. It was free. It took about an hour. It will never  be forgotten. I’m so glad we took the time and shared the experience. According to the docent, the whale will be there for  several more weeks. It is located at the Bean Hollow beach on Hwy 1 North of Santa Cruz about 30 minutes.
